But how come this happened? Did Apple go and do something in specific -- something they're still doing -- that keeps them so incredibly dominant? No one has managed to hit the quality control Apple has (but the Palm Pre has made a good effort). We've gathered together the 5 most likely reasons why.
#5: Planning ahead always works
While some phone companies change their strategies on a yearly basis, and get heavily involved with mobile phone carriers who set the agenda for how phones are developed, Apple decided that it would be all about the unit itself, and its software. One unit, one OS, and no compromises -- and they stuck to it.
#4: It's just all about the damn developers
There are loads of great developers out there doing work for the mac, and they know all about good design. Apple's SDKs have always been extremely high-quality, and this fosters great quality in their developers, too. Naturally, this was their approach with the iPhone, and it has seriously paid off.
#3: The iPhone OS is to phones what OSX is to desktops
All they did was take the same path as with their desktops: control the hardware, and you can greatly increase the quality of the software. Since the iPhone OS doesn't have to run on hundreds of different phones (unlike Symbian or Windows CE), the operating system is automatically optimized for that hardware, and all the software is, too. This pushes the quality of the apps beyond anything else available.
#2: Apple always likes a fight
There were an absolute ton of naysayers out there just chomping at the bit to see the iPhone die, and because of all the other guys in the market, there was no way Apple was going to muscle in and take over. And so when the app store really took off (never mind the initial success of the phone itself), Apple could stand there and smile.
#1: When your standards are high up top, it trickles down
When you've got a company kicking absolute ass when it comes to their hardware, software, and all the included apps, and insisting on some of the smallest, most design-conscious decisions that make a huge difference to the end-user, these same standards trickle down to the developers and make everything great.
